This film collaboration from Vancouver-born director Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein is a smart exercise in small-scale science fiction that airs from August 23, 2019, by WellGo USA Entertainment.
Seven-year-old Chloe (Lexy Kolker) was ordered by her father, Henry (Emile Hirsch) to remain locked in their nursing home. His father thinks he is doing the best for him. The reality cannot be far from the truth. He was not allowed to leave. As for his father, we don’t really know what happened to him. He tells Chloe that his mother, Mary (Amanda Crew), is dead because he broke the rules.
While Chloe might be locked in her house, many things appear and disappear in her closet. He manipulated his neighbor, Harper, to buy his ice cream. Finally, he ran away when dad fell asleep and met the friendly ice cream man, Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern).
Snowcone but that makes us ask. He simply invests in his future where he takes him to meet with ADF agents (Grace Park). What really happened and who exactly is Chloe? Why was he locked up by his father?
The film relies more on characters and fairy tales rather than special effects to reach its puzzling speculative atmosphere. Lipovsky and Stein provided a little context for the disaster that inspired his father to protect Chloe from the world. They were hunted down, as seen from all the locks on the door and the murky paper covering the window, and Chloe’s father taught her how to lie and tell cover stories – home school lessons for the doomsday era.
Most of it is contained within the dark confines of the family home, a story rippling with paranoid tension. Chloe’s father might have looked crazy, but then blood began to drip from her eyes and Chloe began to see the people in her closet, Freaks told the audience that there were many things in the life of this little girl that her father had not told her.
