After Queen’s fans got Bohemian Rhapsody, the Beatles fans finally had the film Yesterday. Although it does not tell about the life journey of the legendary band from Liverpool, at least fans can reminisce with most of their idol songs that are still popular today.

Tells singer and songwriter Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) who has’ performed ‘in small cafes to the sidewalk singing The Beatles’ songs for 10 years. Only friends and the manager Ellie (Lily James) always come to watch and cheer her up.

But everything changed when he was hit by a bus. Awakened from a coma, he realized that only he alone remembered the Beatles’ songs. Jack’s life changed 180 degrees when he began singing the legendary band’s song until finally, Ed Sheeran recruited him as the opening singer at his concert.

The Beatles’ name is huge, not only in England but in the world. The premise of the absence of John, Paul, George, and Ringo formed this phenomenal band is very interesting, because there is a lot of popular cultures that can be lost without the band that was first formed in 1960.

It is not the same as the Bohemian Rhapsody who accentuates the early journey of the Queen while showing what is happening ‘behind the scenes’. But Yesterday at least replays and reminisce with The Beatles’ songs from time to time. For hardliners, it is certain that this film is a must-watch.

Regarding cameo, there is a figure who will make the whole movie theater (especially for big fans of The Beatles) noisy. Who is he?

With the theme of music, there are many references throughout the story about the absence of the Beatles and various other musical groups. One of them was when Ellie mentioned that she had long liked Jack when she first sang Oasis’s “Wonderwall” when they were still in school. And of course, ‘there is no Beatles, there will be no Oasis’ to be a pleasant joke in this film.

Not only music, but references to pop culture (especially from the British realm) are also scattered throughout the story. In addition to mentioning various big names from the world of music and pop culture, there is James Corden who plays himself as the host of the Late Night Show.

Then there is Ed Sheeran who looks impressive when he plays himself (with characters who are a bit obsessed but still good) and plays a role in the development of Jack’s character and story plot. Not only representing the music icons of the present, but Ed also did not refuse when there were a few jokes about him and his songs. Good guy, Ed, isn’t he? Ps: There is a new Ed Sheeran song in this film that is charming.

Light stories are the main selling point of Yesterday. The combination of nostalgia with Jack’s story in realizing his dream made two hours pass so quickly. Not to mention there is some twist that might be partly predictable and partly touching enough to give its own color to the story.

There are many comedies and jokes about music, to movies and TV. All comedy is summarized smoothly and made fresh and becomes a sweet spice of the story. When will you see Ed Sheeran dissatisfied with his songs?

Placement of comedy is also not excessive. There are many messages and lessons that can be taken from this film. The director-writer collaboration Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis were able to present a touching story behind the film Yesterday. From beginning to end, Jack’s story teaches us to be honest with ourselves. Before it’s too late.
